Tkachenko Sees A Bright Future In Ukraine

22 August 2005

Ukraine coach Maryna Tkachenko is unsure if her team will reach next month's EuroBasket Women in Turkey

Tkachenko has seen enough in the additional qualifying round for the European competition to know the national team will fly high in the years ahead.

Her side wrapped up their Group C campaign with a 97-63 triumph over Croatia on Sunday, giving Tkachenko and Co five wins and one defeat.

Now they must beat Poland and Slovakia, who prevailed in Groups A and B, respectively, in a mini-tournament in Bursa, beginning on August 28 if they are to book their EuroBasket place.

Croatia had a chance to win the group and advance to Bursa, but they had to beat Ukraine by nine points or more on Sunday.

They started fast, grabbing a 10-2 lead, but Tkachenko's troops kept their poise and claimed a decisive victory.

Maryna Khabarova led five Ukrainian players in double figures with 15 points.

"I am happy about such a result," said Tkachenko, who turns 40 next week.

"My girls were able to fight back in the first quarter and to finish with a great win.

"To tell you the truth, I was confident of success even in the hardest minutes of this game.

"The perfomance of my team confirms that years later, we'll have a competitive squad."

Tkachenko should know what it takes to win at this levelas she was one of the stars of the Ukraine team which captured the European title 10 years ago.

As for the forthcoming games against Poland and Slovakia, Tkachenko said:

"We still have a good chance to qualify for this year's EuroBasket Women.

"I think no team participating in the Bursa tournament has big advantage."
