Germany: Stolz Wants Answers

05 September 2005

National team coach Olaf Stolz has called on the German Basketball Federation and the German Women's Basketball League to put their heads together and try and find the reasons behind his side's disappointing showing at the EuroBasket Women.

Germany have lost their first three group games and need a miracle to qualify for the quarter-finals, but Stolz says he can have no complaints with the way his side have performed given their lack of international experience.
We simply have too few players who have experience at international level

"Putting your heart into it and giving your best is not enough at this level," he told the Federation's official website.

"We simply have too few players who have experience at international level."

A 66-56 defeat to Poland means Stolz's side need to beat the favourites France and the Czech Republic to stand any chance of extending their stay in Turkey beyond the group stages and achieving their ambitions of a place among the last eight.

However, Stolz believes the quarter-finals was too ambitious an aim to set.

"The games have shown that we haven't come far enough," he added

"Now, we need to make the most out of our situation and give all we have until the bitter end."

Germany lost their first group game 66-61 to Greece and were then beaten 77-67 by Latvia before Sunday's defeat to Poland.
