Germany: Stolz Still Not Satisfied

21.09.2004

Germany women's head coach Olaf Stolz has warned there is still a lot of hard work ahead if they are to reach next year's European Championships in Turkey.

Stolz's team climbed to the top of Group C with a 76-57 victory over former group leaders Romania in Ludwigsburg, but he knows qualification is far from a foregone conclusion with two tricky ties in the coming week.

Germany have three wins in four games like the Romanians, with the Belgians in third place at 2-2.

"There's got to be more self-confidence in their game and they need to be more aware of their own strengths," Stolz told www.basketball-bund.de.

The Germans travel to Israel on Wednesday, where a win would almost secure qualification, but Stolz is not expecting to be given an easy ride despite the 95-50 triumph his team enjoyed over the same opponents on home territory on September 12.

"Israel are far better at home and we can't read much into the first match," he said. "But we want to and have got to win."

That success was the springboard to a three-game winning streak that has taken Germany to the top of the table and put a place in the finals within touching distance.

They wrap up the qualifying campaign at home to Belgium on Saturday.
