Croatia's women's coach Viktor Kovac was left dumbfounded by his team's below-par start to the European Championship qualifying campaign.

The Croatians went down 80-61 in Riga against Latvia in their opening Group B encounter on Wednesday.

Kovac said: "I simply can't understand it. We played very badly, like preparation started (only) a few days ago.

"Our shooting was terrible. We also have defensive problems and some in attack - in general very bad."

Croatia's next match is in Sibenik on Saturday against Ukraine, who lost their first game 67-60 to Slovakia.
