EuroLeague Women Player of the week – Margo Dydek

05.12.2003

Margo Dydek earns MVP honours this week for her instrumental performance in Gdynia’s 74:72 home win over Lietuvos Telekomas. Dydek led her team in scoring (19), rebounds (11) and assists (4). More importantly though, she led Gdynia to another win.

Most experts will agree that Group B of the EuroLeague Women is undoubtedly the tougher of the 2 this season. Containing powerhouse clubs such as Gambrinus Brno, Valenciennes, MiZo Pecs and Gdynia, as well as up-and-coming teams like Lietuvos Telekomas and Samara, finishing in the top 4 and qualifying for the play-offs with be a major achievement.

Can Dydek win her first EuroLeague Women title this year?
For Gdynia, a play-off spot will be a minimum aim goal for the club. The Polish team reign supreme on the home front where they have won the past 6 league championships. Gdynia have also had success in the EuroLeague Women and made it all the way to the final four in 2002. Nonetheless, there is no doubt that they want to replicate their domestic success in Europe.

The key to how the club does lies firmly at the feet of Dydek. The 213 cm center has won European gold in 1999 with the Polish national team and been to the Olympic Games. But she has not yet been able to add a EuroLeague Women title to her resume, despite coming 2nd in 2002 with Gdynia and in 1998 with Pool Getafe.

This season her personal stats are slightly down from her usual high standards and she is averaging 13.7ppg and 7.6 rpg. In the last 2 games she has increased those numbers to 17.5 ppg and 11 rpg and both games were victories. Whatever her numbers, Gdnia need Dydek if they are to bring home the first EuroLeague Women title in the club’s history.
