GAME REPORT

06 September 2005

This time lady luck was shining on Turkey as the hosts clinched a last-gasp victory over Romania to retain hope of qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Turkey were edged out in the final minute by Lithuania on Sunday but clinched a 66-64 win on Tuesday to go 2-2 in Group B with a game remaining.

Turkey were playing catch-up after Romania stormed nine points clear before the hosts had even scored but they fought back to lead during the third quarter.

However, Romania were not prepared to lie down and came back themselves, making for a thrilling final quarter in which the lead frequently changed hands.

Turkey took a timeout with 39 seconds remaining after Nevriye Yilmaz, averaging 18.8 points a game, levelled at 64-64 with a two-point jump shot following a Yasemin Horasan assist.

Romania's Ana Dragus, who scored a game high of 20 points, then allowed a turnover, and Horasan became the heroine for Turkey as she clinched victory with 1.5 seconds on the clock.

Yilmaz and Horasan were Turkey's highest scorers as both claimed 18 points, while Horasan also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Russia and Serbia & Montenegro, also 2-2, play each other in the final preliminary round game while Turkey must take on an in-form Spain side.
