GAME REPORT

03 September 2005

The Czech Republic looked unbeatable for the second day running on Saturday as they hammered Poland 64-47 in Bursa.

Less than 24 hours after their resounding victory over France, the Czechs took a while to hit their stride but once they did, there was no hope for the Poles.

Michaela Pavlickova led four Czechs in double figures with 16 points and she also had eight rebounds.

Pavlickova was the key figure in an early spurt.

After Poland drew level at 13-13 with 1:55 to play in the opening frame, Pavlickova  and the Czech Republic went on a 10-2 surge to take control.

Eva Viteckova started the run with a jumpshot, and then Pavlickova buried back-to-back three-pointers.

She capped the run with a lay-up off a feed from Jana Vesela as coach Jan Bobrovsky's team led 23-13.

But Poland were resilient and fought back with an 11-1 run - they sank a trio of three-pointers in the spurt - at the end of the second quarter to close to 31-29 at half-time.

During the fightback, Agnieszka Bibrzycka made a pair of shots from behind the arc.

The Czechs emerged from the changing rooms at half-time the more determined of the two teams and thanks to Viteckova assumed command.

She nailed three three-pointers over a span of 2:40 and her team went on a 14-2 run to start the third quarter to lead 45-31.

Poland never threatened again.

Czech boss Bobrovsky had predicted before the start of the EuroBasket that Poland could upset the field if they were to win the additional qualifying tournament.

The Poles edged past Slovakia and Ukraine to make it to the final round but they have now lost two straight to open their Group A campaign.

Nothing came easy inside for Poland and they finished the game a woeful eight of 39 from two-point range.

The Czech defence forced them outside and they did manage to hit nine of 14 (64.3%).

Bibrzycka top-scored for Poland with 13 points.

Poland now take on Germany in a must-win game for both sides as they have a combined four defeats between them.

The Czech Republic will take their perfect 2-0 record into a game with Greece.

COACH AND PLAYER QUOTES

03 September 2005

Zuzana Klimesova (Czech Republic):

It was a hard game. They fought for the win but we played great for 40 minutes. Now there are lots of harder games coming up. If we keep to playing well we will go to the finals. I hope we keep winning our next games.

Agniezszka Szott (Poland):

It was a hard game for me and my friends. Czech Repuplic is a powerful team. It was very hard to play in defence and offence against them. We are a very young team, so it was a good experience.

Jan Bobrovsky (Czech Republic Coach):

Thanks for compliments for us. This game was much better for Poland to prepare for tomorrow. We are going to have to work hard to win the next game because Greece has a better team than before (in 2003).

Arkadiusz Koniecki (Poland Coach):

I want to congratulate Czech Republic, they are  a powerful team. We have a very important game with Germany tomorrow. Both of us lost two games, so we are at the same level. If we win the Greece game too we are going to be able to play in the quarter finals in Ankara. We have to fight more than we do. The Czech Republic game was a very important experience for us because there is a big difference between the two teams.
