A remarkable story has been unfolding in Poland this season in the EuroLeague Women with Wisla Can-Pack Krakow unbeaten six games into the competition.
That's right, 6-0!
Wisla were supposed to be in the EuroCup Women but accepted an invitation to the EuroLeague when CSKA Moscow pulled out due to financial problems.
Led by former Halcon Avenida coach Jose Hernandez, Wisla travelled to Spain to meet his old team in the season-opener and prevailed 65-60 to start their winning streak.
The Polish outfit will visit Hungary this week and go up against MiZo Pécs 2010.
Pawel Szatkowski spoke to one of Wisla's leading players, Poland center Ewelina Kobryn, about the club's eye-popping start to the season.
Ewelina, did the late entry to the EuroLeague Women mean there was less pressure, or no pressure at all, to win games?
Ewelina Kobryn: There is always a pressure when joining the competition, because there are always goals which the club makes for its team. It is less important whether we would play in the EuroCup or now in the EuroLeague, because we want always to play for the highest goals.
How significant was the first game in Spain at Avenida?
Ewelina Kobryn: We knew how important that game was for us and for sure, we knew how important it was for our coach. We just wanted to win and nobody considered failure. Since that game, we have been winning, so it may be said that it somehow gave us a little bit more self-confidence, which was needed. And as the results show it helped because we haven`t lost any game since that time.
What has made this team successful?
Ewelina Kobryn: I think that in addition to our squad, everyone from this team, led by our coaches, has a big fighting spirit!
What has the adjustment been like for Jose Hernandez to coach this team?
Ewelina Kobryn: Every new coach needs time to learn the team. From the very beginning. We wanted to create a good, well-working team and we knew that the sooner we could find a common purpose and common language of our work, the quicker we would achieve success.
What can Wisla expect to achieve in Europe this season?
Ewelina Kobryn: Wisła has not reached in her history the first eight of the EuroLeague so certainly we would like to achieve that level.
Are you surprised that Marta Fernandez, one of the best players in the team, is not still in the Spain squad?
Ewelina Kobryn: Of course I am. I know Marta very well, and not only is she a great athlete, she also has a good team spirit. I personally believe that the national team of Spain loses a lot because of not having her in their squad.
Overall, what does Wisla's success say for Polish women's basketball, and how important is it for the country to have a great team before hosting the EuroBasket Women in 2011?
Ewelina Kobryn: The success of every Polish team in the international arena is also a success of the Polish Basketball Federation and it shows how the Polish league is strong. As the host of EuroBasket Women 2011, we don`t want to just be organizers but we also do think about something more. Our national team possesses many very, very good players who may successfully fight for the highest goals, which is also qualification for the Olympic Games.
Thank you, Ewelina
